Luke Donald climbs up leader board in Florida

Former world number one Luke Donald has just two shots if he wants to make up on the overnight leaders in the final round on the final day of the Tampa Bay Championship after mounting a stunning comeback on the third day of the event after falling out of contention for the title early on in the event. Donald won the title last year with a dramatic victory in the playoff rounds against Jim Furyk in arguably one of the best competitions the tournament had seen over the last few years.

Things were not so bright for the Englishman who had not broken the barrier of 70 before the weekend tournament but managed to shoot a four under par 67 to renew his hopes of capturing the title for the second year in row. Luke Donald has a three man barrier in front of him with Justin Leonard, Kevin Streelman and George Coetzee sharing a three way lead going into the final round on Sunday.this is the first flawless round that Donald has hit all weekend and his score of four under can be largely attributed to that one round.

He was brilliant on the shorter holes as he hit four birdies – two of which came on par threes while the other two came on par fours. And these four birdies were just enough for the Englishman ranked at number three in the world at present to climb up the leader board.

After enduring a torrid start to the new season, having suffered a similar ending to the 2012 season, Luke Donald can look back at his performances in Florida as the turning point of his season as he looks to return to Augusta National for the US Masters next month with the hope of capturing the elusive major title.

Bubba left Farmers for Phoenix Open

Bubba Watson has Phoenix Open in front of his eyes because of which he withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open last week. He wanted to give fresh and power-packed performance in Arizona course to ensure a perfect win. Perhaps the incredible performance that he had delivered the previous year that earned him the US Masters, his first major masters, has instilled the hunger in him for more wins. He had beat Louis Oosthuizen in a play-off with a shot from behind trees which had been a one-of-a-kind shot.

Watson is known for his long hits on Tour and his optimistic attitude while playing the hole and that was evident for the first time at the Ryder Cup. Skipping a lot of tournaments this year, Bubba Watson has taken part in only the Hyundai Tournament at the opening of the 2012 season. He made an incredible start the previous year by making out of a decent game trailing Dustin Johnson only by seven shots. Then he went on for an extended break through the entire Christmas and the New Year that followed. The Phoenix Open is really important for him to win because he had been involved with this tourney six times before and lost only one out of them. It gives him an exceptional thrill to play in front of a huge crowd.

The reason for giving the Phoenix Open such weight not just lies in the number of people that come to watch it or because he had played it six times, it is because this championship demands really polished skills in the golf game before a player can attempt to be a part of it. Bubba Watson has just the right amount of them to be an important competitor of the Open. Hence he is ready to give his best.
